Toyota and Sony, two of Japan's biggest technology names, say they are getting together in robotics to develop an innovative, intelligent, single-seat vehicle.
Toyota has shown a futuristic-looking single-seat vehicle called i-swing at various events.
The Japanese car giant, on track to beat General Motors Corp as the world's biggest vehicle maker, as soon as this year, has also shown humanoids that can walk and play a trumpet.
Toyota is introducing as a guide at its showroom at headquarters TPR-Robina, a womanlike robot-on-wheels it...

Lithium Technology Corporation has just created a prototype plug-in Prius that demonstrably gets 125+ miles per gallon. The car uses a new kind of large-scale lithium ion battery that uses lithium iron phosphate as the cathode.
These batteries are well suited for cars. First, they don't explode when punctured and second, they have a very high discharge current. The Prius' battery stores 7 kWh of electricity in 63 Li-ion cells, and the vehicle relies exclusively on the batteries for the first 60 miles of travel. The prototype is, of course,...

During this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, Toyota may ad a new model to its lineup, a new 3000mm-long microcar. The car will slot in below the Aygo, the smallest vehicle in the automaker’s European lineup and will be known as the Endo.
The sales may begin in the summer of 2008, but the U.S. market may wait for the Endo long time.

Toyota is developing a fail-safe system for cars that detects drunken drivers and automatically shuts the vehicle down if sensors pick up signs of excessive alcohol consumption, a news report said Wednesday.
Cars fitted with the detection system will not start if sweat sensors in the driving wheel detect high levels of alcohol in the driver's bloodstream, according to a report carried by the mass-circulation daily, Asahi Shimbun.
The system could also kick in if the sensors detect abnormal steering, or if a special camera shows that the...

The Detroit auto show is a huge theater, a Las Vegas-like stage where carmakers do their best to thrill and amaze a world audience. Toyota will step up this year and present its FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept, a futuristic sports car that would be powered by a 400-horsepower hybrid powertrain.
Of course, the Toyota FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept is just a concept, little more than a container for the overheated dreams of a bunch of designers at Calty Design Research, Toyota's design studio in Newport Beach, California.

Toyota has gone back to the future with the lightweight tandem two-seater Renewable Lifestyle Vehicle.
The concept has a "manual" - or pedal - mode that allows its owners to keep in shape and conserve fuel by pedalling during traffic jams.
The design team says that Los Angeles motorists drive at only two speeds - 8kmh in traffic jams or 120kmh on the freeway.
In manual mode the RLV not only produces zero emissions but the pedal power recharges the electric motor. At high speed, the vehicle switches to electric power and a telescopic...

Toyota is planning to unleash a city car based on the Endo concept, and it has the ForTwo in its sights.
Disguised examples of the stylish newcomer have already been spotted testing in Japan, but insiders have revealed the production car will closely follow the look of the show model. Its stubby profile and smooth surfaces will give the Endo a futuristic appearance - and help it become a more upmarket alternative to the Aygo.
Unusual features include a wrap-around windscreen, vertical tailgate and two-tone bodywork. Toyota's...

A hi-tech safety device developed by Toyota means accident-prone motorists will no longer be able to use the excuse that they don't have eyes in the back of their head.
The Japanese carmaker claimed today to have pioneered the first system in the world to warn drivers of possible collisions from behind.
A radar fitted in the rear bumper detects approaching vehicles and, if a crash appears imminent, alerts the driver by setting off hazard lights, said Toyota, the world's second biggest carmaker after General Motors in the US.
If a...

With the help of BBC TopGear the Toyota Formula One team have set a new indoor speed record. Using the London Excel building, home to the 2006 London motorshow, they drove one of last years Toyota's down the length of the Excel setting a new indoor speed record.
The car was driven by 'The Stig', an unnamed racing driver, who first tested the surface in their Chevrolet Lacetti setting a top speed of 70 mph. Then the Toyota Formula One took centre stage, burning up its rear wheels as it left the line.
