Fiat has spent about $454 million on developing its new Bravo model, which marks the Italian automaker's return to the profitable midsize market, the company's chief executive said Wednesday.
The five-door vehicle, which goes on sale next month, is one of 23 new models the company plans to roll out through 2010 to improve its mix and increase sales to 2.8 million a year.

Italian car maker group Fiat wants to buy back Ferrari, also reacquiring the 5% stake held by the United Arab Emirates Mubadala Development Company. The strategy was announced by Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne, who said he expected the deal to be closed by the end of the month. Alfa Romeo is coming back to the United States in late 2008 with big-sticker cars.
The Italian brand wants the $200,000-plus sports cars to pave the way for a 2010 or 2011 introduction of three volume models.
