Emanuele Pirro withstood a furious charge from Lucas Luhr in the final 20 minutes as the Audi R10 TDI claimed victory its first American Le Mans Series race since March by winning the Utah Grand Prix on Saturday at Miller Motorsports Park.

Pirro and the diesel-powered Audi R10 TDI crossed the finish line 0.314 seconds ahead of Luhr's Penske Racing Porsche RS Spyder. Racing against something with 15,000bhp is a recipe for a face and egg coming together.

This did not stop Audi pitting its Le Mans-winning R10 diesel racer against a Harrier jump jet.

Driven by Allan McNish, the Audi R10 was only beaten by 0.1 second, saving face and showing just how potent the diesel race car is.

Audi did have the sense to keep the race to just one kilometre because the Harrier's 667mph top speed would have taken more decisive role in a longer sprint race.
