Toyota Unveil Hybrid Pedal-Electric Concept
Toyota has gone back to the future with the lightweight tandem two-seater Renewable Lifestyle Vehicle.
The concept has a "manual" - or pedal - mode that allows its owners to keep in shape and conserve fuel by pedalling during traffic jams.
The design team says that Los Angeles motorists drive at only two speeds - 8kmh in traffic jams or 120kmh on the freeway.
In manual mode the RLV not only produces zero emissions but the pedal power recharges the electric motor. At high speed, the vehicle switches to electric power and a telescopic axle widens the track, making it more stable.
The body panels are translucent bio-plastic, while the seats are made of wicker and the floorboards are bamboo and aluminium.
